PRACTICAL GUIDE

Before you choose an energy upgrade

An improvement starts with the building and the problem you want to solve. Consider condition, ventilation and existing systems before choosing a product.

Start with the property

Explain what you want to improve: comfort, energy use, renovation planning or a specific scheme requirement. The purpose influences the information needed.

Gather the right information

The assessment considers the dwelling as a whole. Fabric, heating, ventilation and the condition of the home can affect the next decisions.

Ask the useful questions

Tell the team about damp, access restrictions and work already planned. Do not conceal a known defect behind a proposed energy improvement.

Agree the next step

Assessment, coordination, design and installation are distinct roles. Confirm the required reports and what later project stages need separate agreement.

Put the information to use

Existing EPC, relevant plans, past-work records and details of known condition or comfort concerns.

Turn the information into the next question

Ask what the document tells you and what it leaves unanswered. An energy rating is not an inspection of every building defect. A proposed improvement may need advice about ventilation, moisture, permissions or product suitability before an installer is instructed.
