PRACTICAL GUIDE

Getting ready for electrical and gas checks

A little preparation helps the professional reach the installation and understand what has changed. Keep previous reports ready and confirm who will provide access.

Start with the property

The electrician inspects and tests the agreed fixed installation. Portable appliance checks are a separate service.

Gather the right information

Tell the team how many consumer units or boards there are and the estimated circuit count. Mention extensions, outbuildings and shared supplies.

Ask the useful questions

The report records observations and the outcome. If defects or further investigation are identified, discuss the next steps and a separate quotation for remedial work.

Agree the next step

An inspection does not guarantee a satisfactory result. Keep the report with any subsequent repair and testing records.

Put the information to use

Access to consumer units and relevant rooms; occupiers informed about possible supply interruptions.

Turn the information into the next question

Ask what the document tells you and what it leaves unanswered. An energy rating is not an inspection of every building defect. A proposed improvement may need advice about ventilation, moisture, permissions or product suitability before an installer is instructed.
